City: Buenos Aires, Av. Julio Argentino Roca 1401, Hurlingham I-, Argentina, Buenos Aires
"Considered one of the most prestigious, beautiful and complete sports clubs in the country, the Hurlingham Club, headquarters of the 'Abierto de Hurlingham', is the cradle of the Argentine pole. At the end of the 19th century there were few opportunities for sports in Buenos Aires. The institutionalization of sporting activities in our country began with the boom of international trade, the construction of the English hand railroads and the growing number of British arriving at the shores of the Rio de la Plata. It was at that time that the first social and sporting clubs were founded, which imitated the institutions of England and their sporting offer: cricket, football, rugby, polo, golf, bat fives, raquets, tennis, lawn boots, shooting, hípica, hunting foxes (on horseback) and horse racing, among others. The Club currently covers 73 hectares and has a wide range of services and locations for the development of activities, both corporate and social. Its main buildings have an 'English' style, typical of 'campo'. The origins of the club were not easy. The Englishman John Ravenscroft had the idea of bringing together his compatriots who lived in our country in a space where they could meet socially and practice all possible sports without distinction. He thought of modeling the club on the already existing and highly respected 'Hurlingham Club' in London, founded in 1869 and governing body of the pole around the world. The place where it is located was a total field. There were no routes, no streets, only a few paths or dirt roads, so the most reliable way to get to the Club was riding. As Hurlingham Station did not exist, in the first years, the partners who wanted to travel in the Pacific Railway stood by the side of the road and signaled the first train driver. The hiring of William Lacey was fundamental to the Club. This English cricket professional, known as 'The Wizard of Hurlingham', was architect, builder, enhancement instigator, manager and athlete. He knew how to incarnate Hurlingham's true spirit. Excellent polo player and cricket, he was the father of the legendary Luis Lacey, the first 10 de handicap en polo de la Argentina. In its early years, the Hurlingham Club was a reserved area almost exclusively for gentlemen, where the ladies were barely tolerated, just like the clubs in England. Over time, the English community began to decline. Over the years, the nationality of the partners gradually changed. From being an exclusive club of English, it became first a club of 'Anglo Argentinos' and, then, a club 'Inglese Tradition'. On January 6, 1890 the first cricket match was played in Hurlingham. On June 26, 1892 the first golf tournament was played. In October 1893 the first match of what would be the oldest Open Polo Championship in the world was played. The Hurlingham 'Abierto', considered the oldest and the second most important in the world after the 'Argentine Open', is the most important pride of the Club, as it has the players in activity of the highest handicap in the world pole. Water sports were among the first sporting events of the Club. Almost at the same time with the beginning of the pole practice, the horse races began to be disputed in the hippodrome oval opened on July 9, 1890. The hunting skills (with shotgun) of a partridge, ducks and 'snipe' in the bass of Hurlingham, and pigeons gave way to other sports. Golf was born in the Hurlingham Club with the opening of the first 9 holes on June 26, 1892. Undoubtedly, the Hurlingham Club is one of the most prestigious, beautiful and complete clubs that exist for sports. Today continues the tradition of being, as over 120 years ago, a club of friends where friendship, knighthood, ethics and 'Fair Play' are privileged."
