"A friend, who started as a business acquaintance two years ago, brought me here. He'd given me a German cookbook, and had read about my struggles to make Wiener schnitzel. He brought me to the Brunnenhof to set the bar.The experience was profound. We started with thin-sliced sausage and bread. Then we moved to asparagus soup. My friend Andreas loves asparagus, and waits for it all year. Our soup was pale, silky, with a great balance of asparagus flavor and the faint lemon flavor of butter and the sweetness of cream, and it was dusted with finely-chopped chives. The main plate arrived-- Wiener schnitzel. white asparagus, and peeled boiled potatoes. Two simple sauces came with-- melted butter, and hollandaise. The potatoes were dry and crumbly, and there was a lot of pleasure in crushing them with a fork, feeling that texture. Andreas dressed them with hollandaise, which seems to me like overkill, but it worked. The creaminess of the sauce blended perfectly with the crumbliness of the potatoes. The white asparagus was fat, tender, no stringiness, but with great chew. Melted butter on that. The schnitzel was tender and flavorful, as I expected, but what was really interesting was the unctuous layer, the boundary layer, between the breading and the meat. Slippery, smooth.. haven't been able to do that at home yet. Finally, we had apricot schnapps to finish the meal. Amazing stuff. An orange blossom nose on it, and an amazing flavor-- orange blossom, and for want of a better description, nail polish remover. Wait, wait-- I mean that in a good way-- very aromatic, like truffles. The alcohol hit like pepper on the front of the tongue, but no heat in the throat- -the swallow was just like warm water.A friendly, sympathetic server who found out stuff for us, was attentive without hovering, and beautiful surroundings-- old beams, brilliantly-plastered walls-- contributed materially to the experience. And the restaurant is fantastically convenient to the Hanover Hbf.I've read some negative German reviews of this restaurant. And it strikes me that the mind is its own place. If you come expecting to be disappointed, well, you will find something. But if you dine with a witty, cultured companion, and are prepared to be pleased, you will have a great experience."
